- Final Appointment and Fee
On the day of your appointment you first have to present all the original documents listed in step 3.
Next you pay the non-refundable fee of $2,350. Though the fee is set in dollars, in cash you can only pay the euro equivalent.
The fee is to be paid by credit card/U.S. debit card (card must be in your name). Card payments made at the U.S. Consulate in Amsterdam are processed as transactions in the United States. Prior to your appointment make sure that your card can be charged ‘internationally’ for the aforesaid amount in U.S. Dollars. Note that if your card is rejected the Consulate reserves the right to reschedule your appointment. You cannot pay with your Dutch PIN card. If you wish to pay in cash, please bring the exact amount in euro. Cash dollar payments cannot be processed (see our fees page).
Next you will be interviewed by a consular officer and must demonstrate that you fully understand the nature and consequences of the oath of renunciation, that you are not subject to duress or undue influence, and that you are voluntarily and intentionally seeking to renounce your U.S. citizenship. You will then review and once you agree sign Form DS-4081 and Form DS-4080 under oath.
After the interview your application is sent to the Department of State for review. If approved, the date of expatriation is the date on which you signed the oath in front of the consular officer. The final approval process may take several months to complete. The Certificate of Loss of Nationality is the sole legal document establishing your loss of nationality.
Pending approval of the application by the Department of State, you remain a U.S. citizen and cannot travel to the U.S. on a foreign passport. After the interview your U.S. passport will be retained by the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam, however if you have emergency travel to the U.S. you can contact the Consulate to have your U.S. passport returned. Please plan accordingly and don’t schedule your renunciation interview if you have travel planned to the U.S.
- Delivery of your approved Certificate of Loss of Nationality will be by mail only. To your appointment bring a trackable “waybill” from DHL express. This ‘waybill’ may be purchased online at https://my.dhlexpress.nl/pwa/shipment/package/ . When prompted, please select “Mailbox Parcel”, and enter your personal information as the recipient. We recommend you check the option “E-mail Notification”, so you immediately receive the tracking information to follow your shipment after it has been sent. When asked for information about the sender, enter your own name and the mailing address for the U.S. Consulate General Amsterdam: John Adams Park 1, 2244 BZ Wassenaar. Please use your own e-mail address as sender and receiver so you receive all correspondence regarding your shipment. The cost of the trackable service begins at €3.95. Additional options, such as insurance, can be added for an additional fee but are not required. Once you receive your electronic waybill, affix it to the front of the envelope that is required for your service.
- Alternatively, you may provide 5 regular “1” stamps. Please note this way the shipment is not trackable. Mailing is at your own risk.
Make sure you have all required documentation available before you request an appointment. There are no Walk-In options for this service.
If you do not have the documentation ready at the time of your appointment we must reschedule.
Please arrive at the time of your appointment. Please note that you won’t be admitted more than 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
