Joseph Parente, or Joe, is a career Foreign Service Officer with the United States Department of State with over 20 years of experience in a wide variety of domestic and overseas assignments.  He currently serves as the United States Consul General for Amsterdam in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

From 2016-2018, Joe served as the Deputy Consul General at U.S. Embassy Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  From 2014-2015, he worked as a Pearson Fellow handling Middle East and North African issues in the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.  From 2011-2014, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Consular Section at U.S. Embassy Ankara.

In previous assignments, Joe served as the American Citizens Services Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, and as the Senior Greece Desk Officer in the Bureau of European Affairs at the Department of State.  He also served as a consular officer at Embassy London and worked in both the consular and economic sections in Beijing during China’s accession into the World Trade Organization from 2000-2002.  Before joining the Foreign Service in 1999, Joe worked in the Bureau of Consular Affairs in the Office of Overseas Citizens Services protecting American citizens abroad.  In a career highlight, he went to Cyprus on a temporary assignment in 2006 to assist in the evacuation of over 15,000 American citizens from Lebanon during the Israeli-Hezbollah war.

Born in Canton, Ohio, Joe moved to Las Vegas, Nevada at age 11 with his family.  He attended the National War College in Washington DC, graduating in 2016 with a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy.  He holds dual Baccalaureate Degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as well as an Associate’s Degree in Mathematics.  With varying degrees of rust, he speaks Farsi, Romanian, Mandarin Chinese, and French and is taking his first lessons in Dutch.   Joe’s hobbies include travel, cooking and physical fitness.  He is accompanied in Amsterdam by his wife, Susan Lee, a graphic designer from Haddonfield, New Jersey, and his three sons, Nicholas, Joseph, and Samuel.
