Message for U.S. Citizens – Update Regarding Consular Services for U.S. Citizens in the Netherlands

Update Regarding Routine Consular Services for U.S. Citizens
The U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam continues to operate with limited staffing. Social distancing and other measures required to fight the spread of COVID-19 limit the number of customers we can serve daily. Rest assured that we are prioritizing services for U.S. citizens while still complying with the measures put in place by the Dutch and U.S. governments.

Passport Services
The U.S Consulate General provides passport services for U.S. citizens in the Netherlands.  To schedule an appointment visit our website: https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/passports/.  We are making every effort to offer as many appointments as possible while also remaining compliant with social distancing regulations.  This may result in longer wait times, so please plan ahead.

We all want you to accomplish your passport mission in one visit. To do that,  please verify that you have all the required documentation with you.  There is a checklist available at  https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/passports/.  The failure to bring required photocopies is the most common reason for repeat visits.  Unfortunately, we are unable to make photocopies of your documents.

If you are traveling within the next 7 calendar days and need to schedule an emergency passport appointment, please contact us at AmsterdamUSC@state.gov and include a copy of your confirmed itinerary.

Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA)
The U.S. Consulate General provides CRBA services to U.S. citizens whose children are born in the Netherlands.  For information on the process and scheduling an appointment for a CRBA visit https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/child-family-matters/birth/.

Notarial Services
Effective October 13, 2020, we will resume offering a limited number of notarial appointments to U.S. citizens for urgent needs.  To make an appointment visit: https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/notary-services/.  If you are unable to secure an appointment in your desired timeframe, you may want to pursue other options.  Dutch notary services are widely available.  For a comprehensive overview of Dutch notaries please consult the website of the Dutch Notary Association https://www.knb.nl/english.  All Dutch courts can provide their apostille service via mail-in and many still have in-person appointments.  For more information please see https://www.rechtspraak.nl/Onderwerpen/apostille-legalisatie.

Certificate of Loss of Nationality (CLN)
Effective October 9, 2020, we will resume a limited number of CLN appointments.  We will begin offering appointments on a first-come, first-served basis making every effort to assist those with pending requests as soon as possible.  Please note that we have a significant backlog of pending CLN cases and there will be a significant wait time for new applications.  For more information: https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/citizenship-services/renunciation-u-s-citizenship/

Social Security Services
We have resumed Social Security services at the Consulate.  Please note that we are no longer able to offer services on a walk-in basis.  We will announce upcoming Social Security Days and instructions for scheduling an appointment on  https://nl.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/social-security/.  We also recommend you register on step.state.gov to receive our announcements via email.

Face Coverings and Social Distancing
All visitors over the age of 2 are required to bring a face covering to their appointment. The Consulate will not provide face coverings and you will be denied entry if you do not bring a covering with you.  For more information on face coverings, including how to make, wear, and wash your face covering, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html.

To comply with local social distancing measures, we have limited the number of customers allowed in the consulate waiting room at any given time.  Customers may be asked to wait outside until other customers exit the waiting room.  Our outside spaces are not covered; so please be prepared for the weather.
