Event: Update for U.S. citizens regarding COVID-19 in the Netherlands.

Is travel to the Netherlands permitted? The Dutch government strictly enforces the EU travel restrictions banning non-essential travel from outside the EU with limited exemptions.

Travelers residing in the U.S. who meet the criteria of one of the exemptions as listed on the Dutch Government’s website may be granted entry into the Netherlands:

Travelers who do not qualify for one of the exemptions to the EU travel restrictions may be denied entry at Schiphol airport when seeking to enter the Netherlands or transit the Netherlands on their way to another EU country.  Please note that even if another EU country is willing to grant entry to a traveler under a country-specific exemption, that exemption from the travel restrictions may not be accepted by the Dutch Government.  In those cases, we highly recommend obtaining a direct flight from the U.S. to the country in the EU that will be granting the exemption to the travel restrictions.

Can I transit Schiphol Airport on the way to the U.S.?  Travelers from areas outside of the EU are being permitted to transit Schiphol airport, remain airside, and continue onward to destinations outside the EU, including the U.S.  However, passengers will not be permitted to exit the transit area without proof that they qualify for an exemption to the EU travel restrictions as outlined in the links above.  Travelers who are subject to the travel restrictions and do not qualify for an exemption, must have a confirmed onward flight outside of the EU prior to commencing travel.  Note that it will not be possible to leave the transit area to check your luggage onto a new flight.  A list of overnight stay hotel and shower facilities accessible from the transit area is available at  Please contact the facilities directly prior to departure to ensure they will be operating and have availability during your transit through Schiphol airport.

Are face masks mandatory in public in the Netherlands? Face masks are required on public transport in the Netherlands. The Dutch government has authorized local officials at the municipal level to implement additional measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 including the mandatory use of face masks in designated public spaces.  The measures may vary in different municipalities and visitors are encouraged to carry a face mask when visiting public spaces.

Is the Consulate open for business?  In accordance with Department of State policy worldwide we have begun to gradually resume a limited number of routine U.S. citizen and visa services while remaining in compliance with social distancing policies.  Please see below for details regarding the services available.
