U.S. Consulate General Amsterdam
The U.S. Consulate Amsterdam would like to inform the public that Amsterdam will be host to a grand sporting event as Europe’s very best track and field stars come to Amsterdam’s for the European Athletics Championships from 6th to 10th July 2016.
Venues for this event will include both the Museumplein and Olympic Stadium, where 1300 athletes from 50 countries will compete for gold in one of the 44 track and field disciplines. This is the first time that the European Athletics Championships, held every two years throughout Europe, have come to Amsterdam.
This event is expected to draw very large crowds and police will be present throughout the City of Amsterdam during the events. We expect these events will be peaceful; however, visitors to Amsterdam are reminded to exercise an appropriate level of security and situational awareness and be extra vigilant if attending parties and venues related to this event. Previous events of this kind draw large crowds and, at times, have drawn an increase in public disorder and pickpocketing. Additionally, due to the half-marathon that will be held on Sunday, 10 July, 2016, there will be additional road closures and traffic delays in and around the Amsterdam region.
