The John Adams Institute in Amsterdam provides an independent podium for American culture in the Netherlands.
They invite the best and the brightest from a multitude of disciplines – novelists, politicians, historians, scientists, screenwriters, poets, photographers and tech wizards – to the Netherlands to talk about their work, their thoughts, their insights.
The name “John Adams Institute” commemorates the man who was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence, who was the de facto first ambassador of that young new country to the Netherlands, and who later became the second President of the United States.
There is a unique connection between the United States and the Netherlands. The Dutch founded the colony New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, which gave rise to New York. America’s most vital elements – its mixed society and its free trade ethic — are rooted in those Dutch beginnings. Now that immigration, diversity, and national identity are major topics of debate in the Netherlands, it is all the more valuable that they bring American perspectives to the Dutch. America as a land of immigrants can offer some insights to the country that helped give rise to it.
